Not all website platforms are created equal, and the best choice depends on your business goals, budget, technical confidence and future plans. This guide explores the most common website platforms and where each one shines.

Before choosing a website platform, it's worth taking a step back and asking a simple question:

What do I actually need my website to do?

Closely follow this question with some others...

  • Am I selling products?

  • Am I offering services?

  • Do I need bookings?

  • Do I want memberships or courses?

  • Will I update it myself?

The right platform isn't necessarily the most popular. It's the one that supports your business now and into the future.

Many business owners begin by asking which platform is best. In reality, the better question is which platform is best for your business.

A website for an online store has very different requirements to a website for a consultant, coach, creative business or membership community.

WIX

Wix is often an excellent choice for service-based businesses, creatives and small business owners wanting flexibility without needing extensive technical knowledge.

It offers strong design flexibility, booking systems, blogs, online stores, memberships and event management within a single platform. It is the one I use most regularly.

WIX Studio

Wix Studio is designed for more advanced websites and larger projects. It offers greater design control, advanced responsiveness and additional development capabilities.

For many small businesses, Wix Studio can be more than they need initially, but it becomes a powerful option as complexity grows.

Squarespace

Squarespace is known for beautiful templates and a clean user experience. It can be a great choice for portfolios, creatives and simpler brochure-style websites.

Its simplicity is often its strength, though it can feel restrictive when more custom functionality is required.

Shopify

Shopify excels at ecommerce and is purpose-built for businesses selling products online. Inventory management, product variations and online sales are where Shopify truly shines.

Kajabi

Kajabi is ideal for coaches, educators and membership creators wanting courses, email marketing, automations and memberships in a single ecosystem.

However, it often represents a larger investment than many businesses require in their early stages.

The Right Platform

The best website platform isn't necessarily the most popular one. It's the platform that aligns with your goals, your budget, your technical confidence and your future plans.

Choosing well at the beginning can save significant time, money and frustration later.
